Photos for Kids, 2004

For its second year and in cooperation with Women Helping All People Scholastic Academy (WHAP) in Marin City, the Marin Photography Club taught a group of middle school children the basics of photography in six lessons: using cameras, identifying lines and shapes, evaluating images, work with cameras in the field, and selecting images for a show.

The Marin Arts Council provided grant funds that paid for cameras, film, and prints. The workshop was staffed by seventeen experienced photographers and teachers from the Marin Photography Club. Each participating student learned the basics of photography, had the chance to use a camera to practice the lessons taught, and received their prints and negatives taken from the previous week's lesson.

The final lesson provided a review of the best shots from each lesson, a slideshow prepared by one of the workshop leaders, and 8 x 10 gift photos of each child to give as a Christmas gift to members of their family. In addition, the best 18 photographs were selected and printed as 9 x 12 enlargements by the Marin Photography Program Managers to go on display at the Marin City Library.
